Johnson County, Kansas Payment Under Protest Opens November 1
Kansas property owners have two county-level ways to question a valuation: the informal appeal of the spring valuation notice, and a payment under protest filed when the taxes are paid. The Kansas Department of Revenue's guide says an owner may not pay taxes under protest after already appealing the valuation notice on the same property for the same tax year. The filing windowJohnson County's page says to complete the payment under protest form and file a copy with the County Treasury and Financial Management Office between November 1 and December 20 with the payment.
If at least half of the taxes are paid by an escrow agent, the county says the protest must be filed no later than the following January 31. If taxes are paid after those deadlines, the county says the protest must be filed when the taxes are paid.December 20, 2026 is a Sunday.
The county's page does not say whether a weekend deadline moves to the next business day, so confirm with the County Treasury and Financial Management Office.Who may fileThe county states the eligibility rule directly: property owners who have not had a meeting with the County Appraiser on the valuation of their property for the same tax year may file a payment under protest.Hearing optionsAfter the Treasury processes the form, the county forwards it to the County Appraiser.
